Feast of the Seven Fishes

The Christmas Eve tradition of the Feast of the Seven Fishes began in the early 1900s. This traditional is based on the Catholic custom of abstaining from eating meat on the eve of a holiday, and features many of the diverse types of seafood that can be found in Italian cuisine.

Italian-American families wanted to rekindle the Old Country's tradition by preparing a seven-course seafood meal that helped them feel at home and celebrated the sea. The number seven can be connected to multiple Catholic symbols: there are seven sacraments, seven days of the Creation, and seven deadly sins. Hence, seven seafood courses!

This year when we gather around our family tables, it's more important than ever to connect with each other and find cause for celebration. Even if you're not Italian, everyone can enjoy a delicious tradition deeply rooted in history.

Engrained's Christmas Eve meal was inspired by the Feast of the Seven fishes. Our Fettuccine ai Frutti di Mare featured hand made fettuccine, shrimp, scallops, clams, and mussels in our house made tomato pasta sauce. (Ok, it's not seven fishes, but we think you'll love it!) Dinner includes garlic bread, parmesan broccoli and classic Caesar salad.
