Engrained Starts Organic Farm

When we opened our doors in August 2013, we had a vision to bring local, sustainably grown produce and meat to our guests, in a way that was accessible and affordable for everyone. We've been keeping up with that goal and trying to expand our positive impact on the environment and the health of our community ever since.

In 2017 we had an opportunity to acquire a 23 acre plot of land, and have been working since then to rehabilitate the soil and plan for the future. Our goal is to practice regenerative farming, which is a level beyond even organic. More than an attempt to avoid damaging the soil, the intention of regenerative agriculture is to improve the earth as its farmed, using techniques that increase soil nutrients and allow the growth of food while maintaining nature's delicate balance.

This season so far, we have planted radishes, peppers, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, and cauliflower, with plans to get a few more crops in during the next few weeks, weather permitting! We are very excited for this new direction for Engrained, and can't wait to offer the freshest organic produce possible on our menu.

To learn more about our efforts to support regenerative farming, check out our recent interview with CraftBeer.com and our philosophy.

It’s so refreshing to see a business stay true to its roots for over a decade! I really admire the focus on accessibility; healthy food shouldn't be a luxury. On a totally random note, I’ve been using a Love Tester lately for some quick laughs with friends during our farm-to-table dinners—it’s a silly way to lighten the mood. Since you started in 2013, what has been the most surprising challenge in scaling your sustainable practices?

It's great to see a business investing in regenerative farming and healthier local food systems while improving the land for future generations. After reading positive sustainability stories like this, I often unwind with Slope Rider which is a fast-paced game where you guide a ball down challenging slopes while avoiding obstacles, and it’s a fun way to spend a few relaxing minutes.

Kudos for keeping that wonderful vision alive since 2013. It's truly inspiring. I just took a break from my Drift Boss session to read this, and it really brightened my day.

The fundraising initiative you highlighted sounds impactful and well-organized. I came across a hawaiiadventureportraits blog that https://hawaiiadventureportraits.com/ featured a similar campaign approach, and it offered some interesting ideas on community engagement.
